Exercising with a stability ball – an oversized rubber orb designed for workouts – is an excellent way to strengthen your core muscles. A stability ball forces you to keep your balance, and this challenge works your abdominal, back and other “stabilizing” muscles.
If you’ve never used a stability ball before, be sure to start on a soft surface such as a carpet or mat. It’s also a good idea to take a group exercise class or consult a personal trainer so you can learn proper form.
ou don’t have to know a lot of fancy moves to get started. Here are a couple classic exercises you can easily adapt to the exercise ball:
-ABDOMINAL CRUNCHES. Lie back on the ball with your feet planted on floor about hip width apart. Legs should extend beyond the ball and knees should maintain a 90-degree angle. Be sure that the ball is supporting your lower back.
-SQUATS. With the ball between your back and the wall, perform squats so that the ball rolls down and back up the wall as you do.
